I believe they wrote about their "choseness" with God making them victorious over Egyptians, Canaanites, Philistines and other peoples to buff up their image. In the process they slandered these great cultures. While I believe the didactic portions of the bible were inspired, the appallingly evil portions of it are obviously the product of human frailty and perversion. In sum, those bloody victories of the Hebrews may be interpreted as psychological warfare or just plain PR propaganda.
