How not to use God, and then blame Falwell

Don Fowler, former Democratic committee chairman, making a comment that god was on the Democrat’s side with the timing of Gustav. Not exactly the best thing to say, but especially when a camera happens to be lying behind you probably the wrong thing to say out loud:

However he was apparently making fun of Jerry Falwell:

“Most religious people are praying for people in New Orleans. There is no political connotation to this whatsoever. This was just poking fun at Jerry Falwell and the nonsensical thing he had said several years ago.”

If he had said it in a tirade like Falwell it would be more credible (at least reaching for comical, and failing). He would have been better off saying it was a private conversation and sorry that it caused offense.
