NRA breaks silence

Many tweeters were keeping the stopwatch on the National Rifle Association (NRA) account not tweeting in the aftermath of the Friday massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, as if the NRA had ordered the killings and needed to account for it. Loads of commentators jumped to conclusions which have been covered here in this blog immediately into the aftermath, regarding why the events happened. Most were lessons in abject piety, denial of the issues and trying to score cheap political points way off target.

Finally the NRA issued a public statement today:

“National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.”

Have to admit, whoever worded that statement earned their pay. Right on the money.

The devil will be in the details that follow.
